Camped last night at Palo Duri and woke up at 6:15 this morning and saw Ross's
post and quickly dropped my tent. Arrived at Buffalo lake right as the gate
opened at 8am. No luck on the red-necked grebe after 2.5 hours. There is a
horned grebe present. I has two tree sparrows at the end of the berm once you
cross the lakes. This is a great sparrow spot on the left end of the berm. I
may check it out again in a day or two when I head back south and would
appreciate it if you post and sightings of the red-necked grebe.

Hello fellow birders:
While visiting Buffalo Lake NWR this cool and windy afternoon t around 2:35
pm, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a Red-necked Grebe associating
with Redhead and others at the south end of the refuge, found moving between
the two expanses of water at the end of the auto tour road and northeast of
the viewing blind. The bird was first very briefly seen from the berm road(?)
near these coordinates 34.886557, -102.132614, and after flushing with mixed
a flock of Redhead, Gadwall and Northern Shoveler, was seen from quite a
distance on the larger body of water south of the berm road.

As I had neither scope nor camera and the wind was howling, my guess is that
the bird is a first winter visitor but better views are necessary for
confirmation. I would have gotten word out earlier but was having cell phone
troubles. Also of note were 5 Bonaparte's Gulls on the water and a lone
American Tree Sparrow nearby in the scrubby area between the treeline and the
parking area.

Wishing those interested in the bird much success,
