There was a bird tooting around the smith point tower yesterday.
The winter finch forecast showed large numbers moving down in the eastern
us due to crop failures north of there but much less crop failures in areas
that would feed birds to us. Not real great numbers going by the Duluth
hawk watch and only small numbers going through iowa.
They erupt on average every 4 years and this was to be the year after the
great swarm 4 years ago with only a couple on the echo of the following
year.
Look for purple finches this winter as their main nesting food is spruce
budworms which are way up but the winter food again says the big numbers
will be east of here.

Friends in New England have told me that it is a banner year for
Red-breasted Nuthatches. I do not know if this applies to the middle of
the country, but they are definitely corruptive in the East. We should be
looking for them in TX.
I was away from home when they went through the Coastal Bend the last
time, so I still need one for my Yard List.

this morning! Who knows, we might have an irruptive year for the species.
