[texbirds] Recent West Texas Bird Trip-extremely long

  • From: Brady Surber <supersurber@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Howdy all,

I apologize for the lateness of this post, as some of you might would have
liked to know about these earlier, the sheer distance traveled made it dificult
to post along the way-we hit the Hotel room and crashed. The incredible
diversity we found has made this typing part take longer.

Between 23 and 31 January Lamont Brown and myself made a 2490 mile birding
expedition through west Texas focusing mainly on the counties in and around the
Petroplex( greater Midland-Odessa)

Birds will be listed under the location they were seen. I am proceeding
chronologically and only adding details where I feel appropriate. Counties will
follow location in parenthesis. Highlights(or perceived highlights) in Bold. I
am listing everything we saw so this may be quite boring to some of you-luckily
you have a delete button.

We were blessed with many great birds. Its a good year for Cassin's Finches,
Northern Pintail and Greater Scaup out west.

A word of warning, anyone heading to any of the major Oil producing
counties/cities(Petroplex) in this area, inexpensive hotel rooms are not to be
found. $150-$200 is the norm on the fringe counties, $250-$300 in the interior.
