I am taking my two brothers, who live in Australia and England,
respectively, down to the upper coast on April 17-18, and then to Big Bend
from April 19-22. They would like to see and hopefully photograph owls,
raptors and specific shorebirds (Buff-breasted and Upland Sandpiper,
Hudsonian Godwit).
I would love to get information on any recently reliable sites for Barred,
Great Horned, Barn or Eastern Screech Owl on the upper coast. Is the
Burrowing Owl still at Anahuac NWR? Any good locations for Swainson's or
Broad-winged Hawks, Mississippi Kites? Fields and wetlands for
Buff-breasted and Upland Sandpipers, Hudsonian Godwits? I will be checking
ebird just before we leave but would appreciate any personal observations
from Texbirders.
At Big Bend, we will be looking for Western Screech, Elf, Burrowing and
Great Horned Owls, Common Black-Hawk, Gray and Zone-tailed Hawk, Golden
Eagle. I know the locations for some of these species that are listed in
the guide books (Rio Grande Village for Common Black-Hawk and Gray Hawk,
Sam Nail Ranch for Western Screech, etc.) but don't know if that
information is current). If you know of recent sightings or of locations in
or near the park where they are reliable in spring, I would greatly
