Hi Robert, You just missed an open weekend on The Nature Conservancy's Davis Mountains Preserve. Next open days are 19 October and 7 & 14 December (primarily Christmas tree hunt day, but I think other access is allowed). However, the Madera Canyon Trail (just over 2 miles in length) accessed at the Lawrence E. Wood picnic area is open to the public year-round during daylight hours. The picnic area itself can have good birding as well. In terms of other birding areas, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute outside of Fort Davis might be a site to try. In looking at some advance planning, the Tx Parks service has a notice on the Davis Mountains State Park webpage that the park will be closed from Sept 2013 through Feb 2014. Does anyone happen to have any information on this? Additionally, the Nature Conservancy site appears to have limited access. I remember reading a message string on TexBirds regarding this location some time back but cannot find it. This would be my first trip to West Texas. I would be grateful for any insight the community can give me in regard to these two locations specifically, and any alternatives in the Davis Mountain area that may be productive. I already have Lake Balmorhea and Balmorhea State Park on the itinerary. Thanks in advance!
