First in response to your comment about responses not going to Texbirds, this list operates the way most do that I am on. When you hit respond from e-mail the To: will only put the individual you are responding to. If you want to respond to Texbirds you can do one of two things, either cc: texbirds@freelists or delete the auto To: and replace with texbirds. In my mind this is not problematic it is just an adjustment. It does prevent personal responses from going to the list, which is a good thing, even if we lose a few good responses. "It was an incredible sighting, hawk swoop and hit perching dove, grabbed and took dove to the near tree. I first thought that it was a Sharp-shinned Hawk but was talked to accept it as Cooperâ??s. When processing photos this evening I spent more time checking web than working on photos as my doubts came back. I am now confused again. Perhaps people who know well juvenile Cooperâ??s and Sharp-shinned Hawks can confirm ID of this hawk. I tried to put together all photos that might help to ID. Please note that photos were taken of hawk perching inside the tree in very low light. Photos were taken at 1600 ISO and 1/200 sec so their quality had to be low." I normally don't weigh in on these but I would like to point out a couple of what I consider key points, first the legs look like a Sharpie to me, they always look like they are on stilts. This one the legs are a bit more substantial than most Sharpies but too long to be a Coopers. The most obvious thing though is the head some pictures can be decieving however, even where the bird is looking down at the dove, the eyes have that eyes forward appearance of a Sharpie, and more importantly in that same photo the feathers are not arched. A Cooper in the same position would have his crest up. And last several of the pictures of the tail clearly show the notch in the center of the tail, a mark of the Sharpie. The bird is on the large size of a Sharpie, but they can get that big, still the body is not much bigger than the dove it has. The head, tail and legs I would call a Sharpie.
