A Purple Sandpiper was present at 4:45pm this afternoon in Pt Comfort, Calhoun
County. GPS 28.6639, -96.5788. This is along the road bed leading to the now
gone old Hwy 35 causeway, just west of Pt Comfort and before you cross the
causeway into Port Lavaca if you are coming from Palacios (coming from Pt
Lavaca it is just across the causeway on your right before getting to Pt
Comfort). This old road bed can be driven on and has water/bay on the left and
land/highway on the right. The bird seems to favor the small rock groins about
200 yards down after you enter the old Hwy 35 road bed.
The bird was accommodating when approached in a vehicle, though if in a vehicle
you can still tell when it starts to get stressed. So others may have a chance
to see the bird, please consider birding from your vehicle rather than getting
out. It may be good to stop for observation and photos from a respectful
distance; 25-30 yards seemed to work for me without noticeably stressing the
bird.
Hereâs my checklist with digiscoped pics. Will add better ones tonight.

Iâm tied up with the Matagorda Bay Birdfest most of the weekend but will try
to check on the bird if possible. Hopefully those who look for the bird in the
coming days will post positive/negative reports.
Thanks and Good Birding!
