Congratulations on accumulating all that data! And, getting all those people out to see the birds! We were under the impression that they left by late August and eBird data seemed to confirm that. But I wanted to see if the eBird data was due to a lack of birders monitoring the roost or due to the birds really leaving. We visited the roost on Wednesday night, August 21, and last night, August 23. On Wednesday night we had an estimated 3,000 birds. They ended up roosting in one of the trees right next to Highland Mall Blvd, not one of the trees that they had been roosting in all summer. Last night we had an estimated 200 birds flying around. Where they roosted, we don't know! We drove around the mall attempting to find them but had no success. Looks like the martin show is over for this year. Here are my stats for the season: 6/29/13: 6 people watching, approx 10,000 Purple Martins 7/5/13: 100 people, 15,000 birds; this was a Travis Audubon "Purple Martin Party" 7/6/13: 250 people, 100,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/12/13: 150 people, count unavailable for birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/13/13: 200 people, 300,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/19/13: 200 people, 400,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/20/13: 320 people, 400,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/26/13: 350 people, 400,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 7/27/13: 400 people, 400,000 birds; TA "Purple Martin Party" 8/2/13: 80 people, 100,000 birds 8/8/13: 60 people, 12,000 birds 8/16/13: 27 people, 12,000 birds 8/21/13: 18 people, 3,000 birds 8/23/13: 2 people, 200 birds (roost location unknown) I was at the roost all of those nights except one. It was spectacular every time! Many people, non-birders, told us that this show was better than the bats and then would come back another night bringing friends and family. What a great way to spend the summer.
