Spent one and a half days (and one night) at the Norias division of the
King Ranch.
We had a mild fallout on Thursday out on the coast, with several FOS
species for me. One surprise in an oak motte right next to the coast was a
singing male Tropical Parula. There is virtually no breeding habitat in
the motte, nor for a few miles in any direction from it. Had another one
later in an area where it was supposed to be!
A personal highlight for me was to visit a Ferruginous Pygmy-owl location
that I had not visited for some time. Both the male and female checked us
out for several minutes. At the same location we had an Audubon's/Altamira
Oriole hybrid. We recorded our first Altamira several years ago, and are
still occasionally finding hybrids at widely separated locations.
Audubon's continue to be difficult to see, despite regularly hearing them
in multiple locations.
There was a bit of confusion in the van at one point as I and another
birder were trying to give directions to a Sprague's Pipit right next to
the van. Our directions were definitely NOT the same. Turns out that
there were two in close to the van! I could see one, but not the other,
and the other direction giver could not see mine. We avoided coming to
blows over it;-)
