The recently posted Key to North American Birds by Elliott Coues

offers a look as to how challenging birder ID would have been prior to the
internet, photographic guides, texbirds, facebook etc.
Much of the id keys required you to have the bird in hand so that birding
would have been a little different but more fulfilling.
