Two friends and I were in the Rio Grande Valley over the past weekend and we
saw northward flights of several groups of Turkey Vultures totaling perhaps 200
individuals - some in kettles and some in streams.

Speaking of migrating raptors, I was at Riverside Park in Victoria over the
weekend and counted 39 Turkey Vultures floating northward (plus an Eastern
Bluebird taking food to a nest hole!).

out of Texas and into western Louisiana. Upper level winds (as measured by
"weather balloon" released twice daily by NOAA) vary from due S at 17kts at
Brownsville to W at 4 kts at Corpus Christi to SW at 13 its at Lake Charles.
All NEXRADS are in precipitation mode except New Orleans.

Between rain returns and probable temperature inversions I cannot see any
definite trans-Gulf migrants arriving and it is still quite early for there to
be enough migrant traffic to really show up on radar returns. However I expect
that there will be migrants put down by the weather and these should be looked
for in coastal woodlots and other traditional stop-over locations. Each day
from now through early May increases the likelihood of observable migration.
Large kettles of migrating raptors are just a few days away. The forecast
weather for the weekend will likely give us a nice early season migration
phenomenon.
