Speaking of unusual foraging techniques, I watched a Wood Stork at Tule Lake in Corpus Christi yesterday as it held its wings up over the water, striding with that long, liquid gait, head down, grabbing edibles as it walked along. The morning was clear after last night’s cold front, with a steady N breeze about 10 knots blowing across the lake. I watched the egret fly very slowly, almost at stall speed with head up and legs dangling, low over the water, then suddenly plunging head first to stab at small fish in the lake. It repeated this maneuver several times before heading towards shore. I’m sure it takes a certain combination of wind, water clarity, and fish abundance to make this particular foraging effort worth it energetically. It looked exhausting from my non-egret viewpoint.
