the bird has all the marks of a young cooper's hawk. The young of the year
have fledged and are out on their own now.
Front edge of the wings straight across, even bands on white-tipped tail,
belly stripes to not go all the way down, well striped wings etc.

Cooper's are big soarers at times. At the hawk watch they kettle up with
the broad-wings etc and never flap. With a nice breeze, there is no need to
move. They are a very early migrant and adults are crossing the bay at
smith point in the last few days of July.

The kites and swainson's do not have striped wings and the kites have a
different tail shape.
