Today (Sunday, 11/27/16) in Cameron Co. from 3:10-4:57 PM my wife (Birgit)
and I (Rex) birded FM1599 eastward from FM507 for 2.0 miles, covering both
the north and south sides of the road. Today's effort brought success, both
visually and photographically, in regard to both of our most-wished for
species: MOUNTAIN PLOVER (north side of road, seen mainly when we were at
about 0.4 mi. east of FM507) and SANDHILL CRANE (congregated on both north
and south sides of road at 1.5 to 1.9 mi. from FM507, sometimes flying back
and forth across FM1599). The Sandhills usually stood about or foraged in
startlingly long lines usually several birds thick, lines estimated at
times to be as long as half a mile. Our estimate for numbers of Sandhill
Cranes was 425-450. These birds were a joy to see in such numbers, and
because they were east and southeast of us with a persistently strong
southeast wind, we constantly could enjoy their hauntingly beautiful
voices. Additional species found are noted below.

It was difficult to count the Mountain Plovers with certainty. This was
because their groups, usually 2-3 individuals, but sometimes as many as 4
or as few as a lone individual, were widely dispersed over the north field,
generally at a substantial distance from the road. Counting also was
complicated by their tendency to move about frequently, usually in a
southeast or east direction, into the wind, which was very strong and gusty
out of the southeast. This wind direction conceivably was a factor in their
usual direction of movement.

When the many Killdeer present moved, whether on foot or in the air, their
movement also seemed usually to be in that same direction. The Killdeer
were substantially more numerous than the Mountain Plover, with a roughly
estimated ratio of 5 Killdeer to 1 Mountain Plover.  We estimated that we
saw 20-25 Mountain Plover and 100-125 Killdeer.

Raptors noted were, in no particular order, NORTHERN HARRIER (1 female);
HARRIS'S HAWK (2); and WHITE-TAILED KITE (1, along FM507 a short distance
south of FM1599).

Wishing everyone the best of birding,
Rex Stanford (Weslaco)
