I checked last evening expecting some lift-off imagery from the trans-Gulf flight (those that made it; according to reports there was heavy mortality) grounded by the front on Thursday, but no heavy traffic was apparent. Today the upper winds are already E and light except at New Orleans where they are NE and still rather stiff. Tonight there should be a big lift-off beginning about 45 minutes after sunset. What I did see was some activity from inland stations, especially up through central Texas. This was borne out by the presence of lots of Nashville Warblers in the treetops around my house early this morning. Nashvilles are mostly circus-Gulf migrants. As expected there is no significant bird activity on NEXRAD at midday. There should be still numbers of grounded birds through late this afternoon but I think a lot will leave as soon as it gets dark. There will be hold-overs tomorrow for sure, but today is the day to be in place. John C.
