Went birding this morning with Bill and Judy Quick. Hit St. Edward’s Park,
Bouldin Creek Greenbelt, and the Capitol grounds. Had some good birds. St Ed’s
highlights included at least 2 singing Swainson’s Thrushes, fledgling
Golden-cheeked Warblers and two adults, one with the imms and one singing off
down to the south over the creek, and a late Common Grackle flyover. Bouldin
Creek finally had some warblers. 8 total here with Northern Waterthrush and
male Magnolia being the highlights. Lots of Mississippi Kites and Broad-wingeds
moving too. Two guys had had Kentucky and Mourning warblers there as well.
Didn’t catch their names. Capitol Grounds had some warblers too. Same stuff as
at Bouldin except more numbers. 4 Magnolias, at least 8 American Redstarts, and
a male Bay-breasted Warbler. Bay-breasted was really really nice to see. Also
had a Wood Thrush and 2 Gray Catbirds. I think the Wood Thrush is good, maybe a
bit late.
Hadn’t ever birded any of these areas before. It was good to do so. Did not
make it over to Richard Moya Park which we wanted to. Oh well maybe this week
sometime.
Had Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-white, Nashville, Common Yellowthroat,
American Redstart, Magnolia, Bay-breasted, Yellow, Golden-cheeked,
Black-throated Green, and Wilson’s. So 11 total warblers. Not too many other
migrants except the 2 catbirds and WOTH.
Good birding,
