Magic Ridge was really active with hundreds of warblers and other passerines
skipping across the tops of the small trees and scrub that grow on the ridge.
The action was non-stop from day break to about 10:30 when things slowed just a
bit. Highlights during this period were:
- 15 species of Warblers ( Blackpoll, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted,
Chesnut-sided, Blue-winged, BT Green, N Waterthrush, C Yellowthroat, Tennessee,
Yellow, B&W, Chat, Ovenbird and lots of Redstarts and Magnolias )
- 5 species of Vireos ( Warbling, Philadelphia, Bell's, Red-eyed and White-eyed)
- Orioles, Buntings and Grosbeaks
- The resident Long-billed and Curved-billed Thrashers were quite vocal and
visible
- Brown-crested Flycatchers noisily declaring their intent to establish
territory
- 5 flyover, close range Hudsonian Godwits - especially nice
Despite fairly strong north winds, tides have remained above normal. As a
result, the flats west of Magic Ridge were under water today and shorebird
activity was fairly limited. However, nearby in a flooded field on the west
side of FM 316 were Purple Gallinule, Least Grebe and Fulvous Whistling Ducks.
Great day on the coast today. North winds are forecast to continue through
Thursday. This could keep birds closer to the coast or ground new arrivals
closer to the coast than usual. Regardless, it should be good birding for all
who are able to venture out.
