I love the Mad Island area in Matagorda County. As you travel south of FM 521
the landscape turns to birds. Cranes, geese, waterfowl, shorebirds, etc.
Farmers in the area grow rice, catfish and turf which attracts a large variety
of birds, and waterfowl hunters install impoundments to attract waterfowl.
Finally, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and The Nature Conservancy manage
large landholdings for birds.
Dora Ann and I were scouting for the upcoming CBC today and had fun scoping out
the birds in pleasant weather. Attached is our eBird trip summary
Sadly this was the largest number of geese I have seen since the beginning of
the drought. The birds are using an impoundment which local hunters have set
up as a refuge.
Waterfowl were also numerous on the nearby wildlife management area.
We had 21 White-tailed Kites which is the highest # I have found in this area.
High coastal tides pushed shorebirds into the inland waterfowl impoundments.
We did not pay much attention to passerines and our list shows this.
