Hi Jennifer,
Are you sure these nightjars weren't Common Poorwills? I am unaware of any
Whip-poor-will records for the region, though there may be precedence off
the Caprock to the east. That's not to say it's impossible, but highly
unlikely that multiple individuals would show up in a single event.
Personally, I have yet to detect a nightjar other than Common Nighthawk in
the region, despite Common Poorwills being regular in migration.
