[texbirds] Lubbock Area Birding Summary for September - Long

With 6.94 inches of rain in September, well above the average September
total of 2.57 inches, Lubbock went from slightly below average to somewhat
above average rainfall with 18.84 inches for 2014 compared to the average
year-to-date total of 15.60 inches.  The region remains in drought but, at
least for the fall season, looks to be attractive to even the most
water-loving species though, at last look, a lot of our water birds seem to
be running a bit late.
As always, the county follows the site in ( ) and birds are mentioned by
virtue of rarity, atypical abundance, or atypical scarcity.

CACKLING GOOSE: 1 at Leroy Elmore Park (Lubboock) throughout the month (SC,
AH, PKe), 4-6 at Maxey Park (Lubbock) from 9/4/14 thorugh 9/13/14 (SC,
PKe), 4 at Andrews Park (Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PKe), 1 at Jennings Park
(Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PKe), 2 at Leftwich Park (Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PKe),
and 6 at Gillham-Howell Park (Terry) on 9/21/14 (AH, RK) - OUR USUAL CROP
OF SUMMERING CACKLERS - NO EVIDENCE OF MIGRATORY ARRIVALS.

CANADA GOOSE Aside from the usual small groups of summering birds, 25 at
Leroy Elmore Park (Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PKe) were - THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF
MIGRATORY ARRIVALS.

WOOD DUCK: 1 at Leroy Elmore Park (Lubbock) on 9/12/14 (CC) and 9/16/14
(SC) - THE FIRST REPORT FOR THE SEASON.

GADWALL: 2 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH) and 2 at the Himmel Farm
(Crosby) on 9/11/14 (KH) the only reports - RIGHT ON TIME BUT VERY LOW
NUMBERS.

AMERICAN WIGEON: 1 at Leroy Elmore Park (Lubbock) on 9/12/14 (CC) and 2 at
Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/28/14 (AH) the only reports - RIGHT ON TIME BUT
LOW NUMBERS.

CINNAMON TEAL: 3 at the Himmel Farm (Crosby) on 9/1/14 (KH), 2 at the
Cochran County Golf Course (Cochran) on 9/1/14 (AH), 1 at the Himmel Farm
(Crosby) on 9/7/14 (KH), 15 at the Himmel Farm (Crosby) on 9/11/14 (KH),
and 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/12/14 (CC) the only reports - ABOUT
AVERAGE BY RECENT STANDARDS, LOW BY HISTORICAL STANDARDS.

SCALED QUAIL: No reports away from Muleshoe NWR, the only truly reliable
site left in the region for the species.

RING-NECKED PHEASANT: 4 near Abernathy (Hale) on 9/20/14 (AH, RK) the only
report - INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO FIND IN THE REASON - AT THE LEVEL OF
PLEASANT SURPRISE THESE DAYS.

EARED GREBE: 1 near Anton (Hockley) on 9/20/14 (PKe) and 1 at the Himmel
Farm (Crosby) on 9/26/14 (KH) the only reports - A TAD LOW.

DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT: 1-5 at Leroy Elmore Park (Lubbock) throughout the
month (CC, SC, AH, PKe) the only reports - VERY LOW BY RECENT YEARS'
STANDARDS - MOVING IN LATE THIS YEAR?

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: 2 east of Bula (Lamb) on 9/28/14 (AH) the only
report - CASUAL FOR THE REGION THIS EARLY IN THE SEASON.

GREAT EGRET: 3-6 at Leroy Elmore Park (Lubbock) throughout the month (CC,
SC, AH, PKe), 1 at Maxey Park (Lubbock) on 9/4/14 (SC) and 9/13/14 (PKe), 1
at the Himmel Farm (Crosby) on 9/6/14 (KH), 1 below Lake Six (Lubbock) on
9/6/14 (AH, PKi, CMa, GS), 2 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PB), 1 at
Leftwich Park (Lubbock) on 9/13/14 (PKe), 1 near Abernathy (Hale) on
9/20/14 (AH, RK), 1 near Underwood (Hale) on 9/20/14 (AH, RK), and 4 at

JMi, AM, JMu, MaM, MiM, GS, JW) - BETTER NUMBERS, OVERALL, AND SCATTER THAN
AUGUST BUT NOT UP TO PRE-DROUGHT LEVELS.

LITTLE BLUE HERON: 1 near Brownfield (Terry) on 9/3/14 (MMK) the only
report - FORMERLY ACCIDENTAL TO THE REGION; NOW ANNUAL AS A POST-BREEDING
WANDERER.

CATTLE EGRET: Fourteen reports of 1-10 birds, eight reports of 11-15 birds,
and seven reports of 26-50 birds in the region (Crosby, Hale, Lamb,
Lubbock, Lynn, Terry) during the period (PB, CC, SC, KH, PKe, PKi, RK, CMa,
RR, GS) - A GOOD INCREASE FROM THE LOW NUMBERS SEEN EARLIER IN THE SEASON
BUT STILL NOT AT PRE-DROUGHT LEVELS.

YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON: 1 -2 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) throughout the
month (PB, CC, SC, AH, JJ, JK, CMi, JMi, AM, JMu, MaM, MiM, RR, GS, JW), 1
at Lake Six (Lubbock) on 9/6/14 (AH, PKi, CMa, GS), and 1 at Erskine Marsh
(Lubbock) on 9/8/14 (RR) the only reports - LOW; NO REAL EVIDENCE OF
BREEDING IN THE REGION THIS YEAR.

WHITE-FACED IBIS: Twelve reports of 1-10 birds, three reports of 11-25
birds, three reports of 26-50 birds, and one report of 75 birds in the
regon (Bailey, Cochran, Crosby, Lamb, Lubbock) during the period (SC, KH,
PKe, PKi, RK, RS) - A BIT OF A REBOUND SINCE EARLIER IN THE SEASON BUT
STILL NOT AT PRE-DROUGHT LEVELS.

OSPREY: 1 at Lake Six (Lubbock) throughout the month (CC, SC, AH), 1 at
MacKenzie Park (Lubbock) on 9/6/14 (AH, PKi, CMa, GS), 1 at Ransom Lake
(Lubbock) on 9/6/14 (PKi), 1 at MacKenzie Park (Lubbock) on 9/14/14 (AH), 1
at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/20/14 (SC), 1 at Gillham-Howell Park (Terry)
on 9/21/14 (AH, RK), and 1 in south Lubbock (Lubbock) on 9/22/14 (CC) -
ABOUT AVERAGE.

SHARP-SHINNED HAWK:1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/27/14 (SC, AH) the only
report - VERY LATE AND VERY LOW.

COOPER'S HAWK: 1 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/6/14 (SC, RS), 1 at Clapp
Park (Lubbock) on 9/7/14 (AH), 1 at the Himmel Farm on 9/11/13 and 9/12/14
(KH), 1 near Whiteface (Cochran) on 9/19/14 (RK), 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock)
on 9/20/14 (SC), and 1 in Littlefield (Lamb) on 9/24/14 (AR) the only
reports - ALSO LATE, IF NOT SO LOW IN NUMBERS, THIS YEAR.

RED-SHOULDERED HAWK: 1 below Lake Six (Lubbock) on 9/27/14 (AH) - FORMERLY
ACCIDENTAL IN THE REGION; NOW ANNUAL AS A MIGRANT AND CLOSE TO ANNUAL AS A
WINTERING SPECIES.

BROAD-WINGED HAWK:1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/7/14 (AH) and  2-3 at
Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/27/14 (SC, AH) the only reports so far this
season - LATE AND A TAD LOW.

GOLDEN EAGLE: 2 adults at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH) - FORMERLY
AN OCCASIONAL SUMMER RESIDENT; THIS NOW CONSTITUTES AN EARLY RECORD.

VIRGINIA RAIL: 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/7/14 (AH, RR) the only report
- LOW.

SORA: 1-2 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) from 9/10/14 to 9/13/14 (SC, PKe), 1 at
Clapp Park (Lubbock) from 9/20/14 to 9/22/14 (SC), 11 at the Tokio Playa
(Terry) on 9/19/14 (RK), 9 at the Tokio Playa (Terry) on 9/21/14 (AH, RK),
1 at Reese Center (Lubbock) on 9/30/14 (CC) - MUCH BETTER, IN TERMS OF
NUMBERS, THAN EXPECTED THESE DAYS.

BLACK-NECKED STILT: Sixteen reports of 1-10 birds, six reports of 11-25
birds, and one report of 35 birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran, Crosby,
Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period (SC, AK, KH, PKe,
PKi, RK, RS) - DECENT SCATTER BUT LOW NUMBERS BY RECENT YEARS' STANDARDS.

AMERICAN AVOCET: Fifteen reports of 1-10 birds, eight reports of 11-25
birds, and five reports of 26-50 birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran,
Crosby, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period (SC, AH, KH,
PKe, PKi, RK, CMa, GS, RS) - DECENT SCATTER BUT LOW NUMBERS BY RECENT
YEARS' STANDARDS.

BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER: 1 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH) and on
9/28/14 (AH, photos) - CASUAL IN THE REGION; TWO REPORTS IN A SINGLE SEASON
IS PRETTY GOOD THESE DAYS.

SNOWY PLOVER: 16 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH) and 1 at Muleshoe
NWR (Bailey) on 9/6/14 (SC, RS) the only reports - FORMERLY MORE ABUNDANT
IN THE REGION; THIS IS PRETTY GOOD BY RECENT STANDARDS.

SPOTTED SANDPIPER: Ten reports of 1-3 birds in the region (Cochran, Crosby,
Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period (SC, AH, KH, PKe,
PKi, RK, CMa, GS, RS) - ABOUT AVERAGE FOR SEPTEMBER.

SOLITARY SANDPIPER: Twelve reports of 1-5 birds in the region (Cochran,
Hale, Lamb, Terry) during the period (SC, AH, KH, RK, RS) - A BIT BETTER
THAN EXPECTED BY RECENT YEARS' STANDARDS.

GREATER YELLOWLEGS:  Fourteen reports of 1-8 birds in the region (Bailey,
Cochran, Crosby, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period
(AH, KH, RK) the only reports - DECENT SCATTER BUT LOW NUMBERS.

WILLET: 1 south of Crosbyton (Crosby) on 9/28/14 (KH) the only report -
FORMERLY CONSIDERED CASUAL IN THE REGION, NOW CLOSE TO ANNUAL AS A SPRING
AND FALL MIGRANT.

LESSER YELLOWLEGS: Eighteen reports of 1-10 birds and two reports of 12-17
birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran, Crosby, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Terry)
during the period (SC, AH, KH, RK, RS) the only reports - DECENT SCATTER
BUT LOW NUMBERS.

UPLAND SANDPIPER: Seven reports of 1-2 birds in the region (Crosby,
Lubbock, Terry) during the period (SC, AH, KH) - A TAD LOW BUT NOT A LOT OF
FOLK LISTENING AT THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY.

LONG-BILLED CURLEW: 17 at the Smyer Playa (Hockley) on 9/1/14 (AH) the only
report - NO SCATTER AND LOW NUMBERS.

MARBLED GODWIT: 2 north of Fieldton (Lamb) on 9/20/14 (AH, RK, photos) the
only report - FORMERLY ANNUAL TO THE REGION, NOW CLOSING ON CASUAL.

STILT SANDPIPER: Nine reports of 1-10 birds, one report of 12 birds, and
one report of 119 birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran, Crosby, Hale, Lamb)
during the period (AH, KH, RK) the only reports - GOOD SCATTER AND GOOD
NUMBERS BUT ONLY ONE OF THE LARGE FLOCKS WE EXPECT THIS TIME OF YEAR.

LEAST SANDPIPER: Thirteen reports of 1-10 birds and four reports of 11-25
birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran, Crosby, Hale, Lamb) during the period
(SC, AH, KH, RK, RS) - GOOD SCATTER BUT LOW NUMBERS.

BAIRD'S SANDPIPER: Seven reports of 1-10 birds and three reports of 11-25
birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran, Hockley, Lamb) during the period (SC,
AH, RK, RS) the only reports - SCATTER A BIT POOR AND NUMBERS A BIT LOW.

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER: 7 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH), 2 at the
Cochran County Golf Course (Cochran) on 9/1/14 (AH), 1 at the Himmel Farm
(Crosby) on 9/1/14 (KH), 1 at the Smyer Playa (Hockley) on 9/1/14 (AH), and
3 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/28/14 (AH) the only reports - DECENT
SCATTER BUT POOR, MAYBE EVEN VERY POOR, NUMBERS.

WESTERN SANDPIPER: Nine reports of 1-10 birds and two reports of 12-14

LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER: 26 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/1/14 (AH) and 2 at
Smyer Playa (Hockley) on 9/1/14 (AH) the only reports - EXTRAORDINARILY LOW
NUMBERS.

WILSON'S SNIPE: 2 at the Tokio Playa (Terry) on 9/19/14 (RK), 3 at the
Tokio Playa (Terry) on 9/21/14 (AH, RK), 2 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on
9/27/14 (AH), 4 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/28/14 (AH), and 4 near
Littlefield (Lamb) on 9/28/14 (AH) - ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD FOR THIS EARLY IN

PHENOMENAL, NUMBERS.

RED-NECKED PHALAROPE: 4 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/6/14 (SC, RS), 6
north of Whiteface (Cochran) on 9/19/14 (RK), and 3 at Muleshoe NWR
(Bailey) on 9/28/14 (AH) - FORMERLY CONSIDERED CASUAL DURING FALL
MIGRATION, NOW KNOWN TO BE ANNUAL.

BLACK TERN: Fourteen reports of 1-10 birds in the region (Bailey, Cochran,
Crosby, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock) during the period (PB, SC, AH, KH,
PKe, RK) - ABOUT AVERAGE FOR THIS UNCOMMON MIGRANT.

FORSTER'S TERN: 1 at Buster Long Park (Lubbock) on 9/21/14 (JM) the only
report - SURPRISINGLY LOW NUMBERS GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE LARGER
LAKES.

INCA DOVE: 1-4 daily in Littlefield (Lamb) through the month (AR), 5 at
Ransom Lake (Lubbock) on 9/6/14 (AH, PKi, CMa, RR, GS), and 5 in the Tech
Terrace neighborhood (Lubbock) on 9/22/14 (CC) the only reports - BARELY
HANGING ON.

YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO: 1 at Lake Six (Lubbock) on 9/14/14 (PB, AH) the only
report - INCREDIBLY LOW NUMBERS, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE EVIDENCE OF RECOVERY
DURING THE BREEDING SEASON.

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD: 1 in south Lubbock (Lubbock) on 9/15/14 (PB), 1
in a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) from 9/19/14 through 9/21/14 (AH, RK), 1 at
Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/27/14 (SC, AH, JM, GS), and 1 in a Lubbock yard
(Lubbock) on 9/27/14 (JC) - A VERY GOOD SHOWING; THIS MAY BE NORMAL AS THE
SPECIES IS EASILY OVERLOOKED IN FALL PLUMAGE.

BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD: 1 at the Denver City Recreational Trail (Yoakum)
on 9/13/14 (CC, SC) and 1 in a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) on 9/25/14 (SC) the
only reports - ACTUALLY, A TAD LOW BY RECENT YEARS' STANDARDS.

ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD: 1 immature male in a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) on 9/18/14
(AH) - CASUAL IN THE REGION AS A FALL MIGRANT.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: Eleven reports of 1-2 birds in the region (Crosby,
Lamb, Lubbock) during the period (SC, AH, KH, RR, AR) - ABOUT AVERAGE FOR
THIS UNCOMMON FALL MIGRANT.

CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD: 1 in a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) on 9/25/14 (SC) the
only report - AS USUAL, THIS SPECIES PEAKED IN AUGUST.

RED-HEADED WOODPECKER: 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/22/14 (CC) the only
report - LOW NUMBERS BUT NO TIME SPENT BY OBSERVERS IN THE EASTERN COUNTIES.

PEREGRINE FALCON: 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/7/14 (AH, RR), 1 near
Underwood (Hale) on 9/20/14 (AH, RK), and 1 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on
9/28/14 (AH) - ABOUT AVERAGE FOR THIS RARE, BUT ANNUAL, WINTERER.

PRAIRIE FALCON: 1 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) throughout the period (AH) the
only report - LOW, NUMBERS GENERALLY START BUILDING BY LATE SEPTEMBER.

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER: Twenty reports of 1-3 birds in the region (Cochran,
Hale, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry, Yoakum) during the period (PB, CC, SC, AH, PKe,
RK,  RR)  - ABOUT AVERAGE.

WESTERN WOOD PEWEE: Thirty reports of 1-5 birds in the region (Bailey,
Cochran, Crosby, Hale, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period (PB, CC, SC,
AH, KH, PKe, PKi, RK, CMa, RR, GS, RS) - ABOUT AVERAGE; NO REPORTS OF TRULY
EXCEPTIONAL NUMBERS AS IN SOME RECENT YEARS.

WILLOW FLYCATCHER: Nineteen reports of 1-2 birds in the region (Bailey,
Cochran, Hale, Lamb, Lubbock, Terry) during the period (PB, SC, AH, PKi,
RK, CMa, RR, GS, RS) - ABOUT AVERAGE; PERHAPS A TAD LOW.

report - SURPRISINGLY LOW, GIVEN THE ABUNDANCE OF OTHER 'WESTERN' EMPIDS
DURING THE SEASON.

(Lubbock) on 9/20/14 (SC) the only reports - FORMERLY MORE COMMON; ABOUT
AVERAGE BY RECENT YEARS' STANDARDS.

EMPIDONAX:  Eighteen reports of 1-2 unidentified empids in the region
(Cochran, Hale, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Terry) during the period (CC, SC, AH,
PKe, RS) - INCLUDED TO SHOW THAT A) WE DON'T GET 'EM ALL AND B) THAT IT WAS
A PRETTY GOOD SEASON FOR EMPIDS.

SAY'S PHOEBE: 1 at the Smyer Playa (Hockley) on 9/1/14 (AH), 3 near
Crosbyton (Crosby) on 9/10/14 (KH), and 2 near Underwood (Hale) on 9/20/14
(AH, RK) - ABOUT AVERAGE FOR THIS UNCOMMON FALL  MIGRANT.

EASTERN PHOEBE: 1 at the Petersburg Dump (Hale) on 9/20/14 (AH, RK) the
only report - LOW.

ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER: 1 at Lake Six (Lubbock) on 9/14/14 (AH) - WAS
RUNNING A BIT LATE.

GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER: 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/7/14 (AH, RR), on
9/12/14 (CC), and on 9/13/14 (PB) - FORMERLY ACCIDENTAL THIS FAR WEST INTO
THE REGION; NOW EXPECTED ANNUALLY.

RUNNING A BIT LATE IN THE SEASON.

BALTIMORE ORIOLE: 1 first fall male at Lake Six (Lubbock) on 9/6/14 (AH,
PKi, CMa, GS) and 2 at the Himmel Farm (Crosby) on 9/26/14 (KH) - FORMERLY
CONSIDERED ACCIDENTAL IN THE REGION, NOW ANNUAL AS A SPRING OVERSHOOT AND
POST-BREEDING WANDERER.

AMERICAN GOLDFINCH: 1 female at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on9/7/14 (AH) and 1 at
the Himmel Farm (Crosby) on 9/22/14 (KH) the only reports so far- A SLOW
START BUT OCTOBER USUALLY SEES THE MAJOR TRANSITION FROM LESSER TO AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES IN THE REGION.
