Hello Texbirders, Yesterday(12/30) a female Long-tailed Duck was found on Texas Municipal Power Agency land during the Gibbons Creek CBC. Excellent birders Rick Bello, Terry Thibodeaux, Tom Kihn, and a TMPA employee found this bird at the end of the day. The location of the duck is near Carlos in Grimes County. It's either the first or second record for Long-tailed Duck in the Central Brazos Valley. This afternoon a small group of birders were escorted by TMPA employees back to the location of the duck. Everyone had great looks at the duck at close range. We watched her swim mostly by herself and she preened periodically. Photographs were obtained and will be provided soon. As we were leaving the site of the LTDU she was joined by a Ruddy Duck. TMPA will provide access to the duck during the work week. The location of the Long-tailed Duck is in a highly restricted area. There are dangers along the route to the duck. TMPA has agreed to escort small groups of birders to the location of the duck. TMPA employees will be with birders during the duration of the visit. Visits to the location will be short. Group trips will be arranged with TMPA after January 1. Can't wait to see what next year's Gibbons Creek count will bring!
