Yesterday, June 4, evening, Bert Meisenbach (an occasional biking and birding friend) and I went to the gazebo on the peninsula on Lady Bird Lake (Austin) to see what came in to roost on the island just off the peninsula (near the hostel on S side of lake). We had done that a few years ago and had a steady stream of birds then, including an Anhinga and all the herons and egrets found in Austin this time of year. This year the bird traffic was pretty slow, perhaps because of many scull crews rounding the island almost to dusk. However, 2 Tricolored Herons made an appearance (one flying in from somewhere up the peninsula and one that stepped out briefly from the low foliage), as did an apparent pair of Vermillion Flycatchers that moved back and forth from island to peninsula. We also had Cardinals, Martins, Cliff, Bank, and Barn Swallows, Great Egrets (2), Little Blue Herons (2), Wood Ducks (4), a couple of Coots, Green Herons (5), House Finches, and Chimney Swifts. Oddly, we saw neither night heron nor a great blue, nor snowy. There just don't seem to be as many birds using it as a roost as before. The Tricolored Heron brings me to 120 in patch for the year.
