I am one of those who have been working off-line so far - but here is a report - I am now officially out of the closet. Well I have taken up the LPC (Local Patch Challenge) with my circle centered on my home which is about 2.65 miles WSW of the center of the Buffalo Bayou CBC at Houston Audubon and here in urban West Houston. So I miss Memorial Park, but gain all of the west side of Barker Reservoir. And of course the jewel in this area is all of Bear Creek and Addicks Reservoir areas. Of huge importance also are the Eldridge water retention ponds just north of the Westpark Tollway. I blame Ken Hartman and Jim Hinson for getting me into this because of their guidance with two of the first birds on my list in the first days of Janauary: Henslow's Sparrow and Greater Pewee, respectively. As of today, after adding Sharp-shinned Hawk and Winter Wren I stand at 119. Gaps are Brown Thrasher, Creeper and Woodcock (although I did have a Woodcock flying over Interstate 10 at Silber this morning at 8:00 a.m. - 1.5 miles east of my eastern boundary - drat!). Tougher gaps are Purple Finch, Sprague's Pipit and Rusty Blackbird. Most unexpected so far was a single rogue Bonaparte's Gull flying over Barker Reservoir about two weeks ago after the bigger rains. Diving ducks, geese and shorebirds are the big challenge going forward, shorebirds especially since I can find no good habitats for these so far in the circle. A single Ruddy Duck, a single Pintail and a pair of Hooded Mergansers all were more than I expected to have on the list so far. Will report again sometime in the spring. Good birding. I count 20 patches over 100 species now, and I'm sure there are several others not on eBird. Winter will be winding down and I expect most of us will be target birding, trying to locate those winter species before they leave.Time to make a list of those birds we have expected and not found yet! I have about 10 species in mind I need to find ASAP before spring gets here. Activity has been high. I was just curious how many gallons of gas this challenge has save?. Each gallon of gas not burned saves about 20 pounds of CO2 emissions. I myself have likely saved 15-20 gallons of gas or 300-400 pounds of CO2, and I get to bird a lot more! I'm curious, what has been the best bird in your patch? -- David Sarkozi Houston, TX (713) 412-4409 twitter ID dsarkozi Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
