Austin, mostly North Austin patch. Other obligations kept me from much birding
at all today. But late this afternoon I did go over to the retention ponds
between Shoal Creek and Great Northern at the hike/bike ramp to Far West &
Mopac. There are 2 ponds with a levee between and a small, but fairly thick
woods on the easternmost. Last night's rains added a good bit of water to both
ponds, and there is still pretty good flow as of right now. I tallied 18
species including the usual urban suspects but also some migrants and not
terribly usual species, including:

Brown-headed Cowbirds (2)
Common Yellowthroat (1 female)
Mourning Warbler (1 very handsome male that poked his head out of a thicket,
new for patch and year)
Northern Waterthrush (1)
Yellow-crowned Night Heron (1)
I thought the Yellowthroat at first was going to turn out to be some lingering
wren like Marsh or Sedge that Sam would want a picture of, but was fortunate in
avoiding that.

When I returned home, parked, headed for the door, a male House Finch flew into
the small pecan tree right next to my parking spot and sang right in front of
me. That's always nice, but especially so this evening because it held me
outside just long enough for a Common Nighthawk to buzz up high. And that's my
first for the year and for the patch. With the Mourning Warbler, it brings me
to 218 for my patch.
