Hi All, I meant to get this out earlier today, but time flew. It was a beautiful day, so I decided to try to find the Lewis' woodpecker off CR 1100 (north of Shallowater). I was there from 2:00 - 4:!5 pm. I found it fairly early on, but it did not give me good looks until the end when it was eating and stashing pieces of pecan into one of the trees. It was active almost the entire time I was there. When it seemed to settle down for a bit, I turned to look at some white-crowned sparrows and missed the woodpecker as it flew into the orchard, which would have provided great looks. I looked up just in time to see it fly away with a pecan. While I was there the manager of the pecan orchard and a landowner came out to make sure that I wasn't poaching animals from the road. Apparently they have been having trouble with people shooting turkeys, deer, and birds on power lines. They weren't concerned with me in the least as soon as they found out I was just birding. If you go out there during a weekday, don't be surprised if you are approached. âIn addition to the Lewis' Woodpecker, I saw: Western Meadowlarks House Finches 3 hawks too far away to identify Dark Eyed-Junco (Slate colored male) Northern Flicker Merlin White-crowned Sparrows Loggerhead Shrikeâ Great-tailed Grackle Doves -- Jennifer Miller Lubbock, TX {o,o} /)_) " " Blog - http://foundnature.weebly.com/index.html Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
