After working on mundane tasks the first part of the day, I headed out to north side of Lake Granger. Two highlights of the day was a wetland area on CR 356 that had 9 snipes. The burrowing owl has not been at his spot on the concrete pile the last three times I've been there. I was sitting near the wildlife management area on 356 at sunset hoping for the short eared owls. I went back to the Sore Thumb overlook and then at twilight made one more pass hoping for the owls. I was rewarded - one of them flew right over my car about 5-10 feet up. I could see two in the air. Not included on this list - when I first arrived I could see what I thought were terns hunting over the lake at Sore Thumb. I was more interested in using my time to find the elusive mountain plovers and longspurs and prairie falcons - so I didn't take time there to do more than note in my mind that I saw 5 or 6 probable terns. No luck on the elusive species this trip. I spent most of my time cruising the county roads north of Lake Granger. mammelton Jan 2, 2014 Granger Lake Area (HOTE 031) Traveling 8 miles 130 Minutes Observers: 1 All birds reported?
