[texbirds] LRGV: La Feria/Las Palomas/Donna loop - 16 July 2012

A few highlights from today's intermittent birding:
Fulvous Whistling-Duck - 4 at La Feria Nature Center, 2 at Las Palomas
(Ebony) WMA, 4 at the Donna Landfill ponds, 1 at the Valley turf fields
(junction of FM 493 & E81/2 Road in Donna);
Blue-winged Teal - 1 on La Feria WWTP ponds, 2 on Valley turf fields;
Ruddy Duck - 2 at Las Palomas;
Least Grebe - 4 at Las Palomas, 1 at the eastern pond at the Donna
Landfill (has been here for several days - on a pond that is virtually
without vegetation);
Least Bittern - 2 at La Feria Nature Center;
White-tailed Kite - 3 over Valley turf fields;
Swainson's Hawk - over Valley turf fields;
King Rail - at least 3 at La Feria Nature Center (heard only);
Solitary Sandpiper - at least 7 on Valley turf fields;
Spotted Sandpiper - at Las Palomas;
Lesser Yellowlegs - 5 at Las Palomas, 580+(!) on Valley turf fields;
Least Sandpiper - 13 at Las Palomas, 30+ on Valley turf fields (the only
peeps I came across);
Stilt Sandpiper - 7 at Las Palomas;
Black Tern - 2 over La Feria WWTP ponds; &
Green Kingfisher - male fishing on the (3' wide) drainage channel at
Valley turf fields.
