I was out early this AM (4:35 AM) riding my recumbent trike when I heard the local male N. Mockers sounding off. The one nearest my house was definitely the "Big Dog" as it sang perfect imitations of a Common Nighthawk, a White-eyed Vireo, a Carolina Wren, an E. Bluebird, a No. Cardinal, a Carolina Chickadee, a European Starling, and a Purple Martin; the only bird missing was a Chuck Will's Widow, which is usually imitated very well by the local Mockers. Of course the CW's Widow does not normally pass through my neighborhood until April, but then again, tomorrow is April 1st! The other Mockers were simply not in his league, with weaker voices, and not nearly as many song imitations. I just came in from watering my flowers out front, where I witnessed four male E. Bluebirds dueling over territory; there was only one winner, who chased the other three away. It is amazing to me that in the period of 3 years, my "local patch" has gone from zero E. Bluebirds to 4 males fighting in my front yard!
