The 4th running of this CBC will be held Monday 23 December. The Laguna Madre is the most valuable wetland in Texas. It is a unique and remote part of the Coast. The Laguna Madre within the Count Circle has expansive seagrass beds, wind tidal flats, barrier island grasslands and miles and miles of beach. Some of the hi-lights of the 1st 3 times we conducted this count were: Gadwall 5,000 Am. Wigeon 5,000 N. Pintail 62,000 Redhead 15,000 Eared Grebe 400 Peregrine Falcon 8 Snowy Plover 1235 Greater Yellowlegs 1008 Willet 2937 Marbled Godwit 696 Sanderling 1200 W. Sandpiper 159,000 Least Sandpiper 25,000 Dunlin 46,000 The count circle by vehicle is 17 miles south of the Padre Island National Seashore office along the beach and 25 miles south of the boat ramp. Two boats will transport birders to the west side wind tidal flats to mostly survey waterbirds at the edge of the Laguna Madre. Birders will have to walk about 5 miles counting birds for about 6 hours with the rest of the day being used in transportation. One UTV will transport a birder along the beach to be dropped off on the wind tidal flats on the east side and they will need to walk at least 5 miles, but more is available if they can handle it. They will be transported by vehicle back to headquarters at the end of the day. If somebody wants to walk all day in the grasslands behind the dunes, they will be transported to and from the site. If somebody has a 4-wheel drive that is suitable for driving soft sand all day, they can cover the beach portion of the CBC which has 12 miles of beach once they get into the count circle. Otherwise park service staff will handle it. It is truely a unique area, but should only be surveyed if people have the capabilities to be in the out-of-doors all day in whatever weather is present for the day.
