This year's numbers seem to be up. We are getting 2500 to 3000 roosting nightly
in the reserve area to the east of FM 362 and south of Hebert Road in Waller
County.
To see these birds you can go any evening and see probably 70% of the flock
returning to roost in the 45 minutes before sunset. The largest part of the
flock feeds to the north and west of the roost daily. To see them you should
arrive no later than 45 minutes before sunset preferably an hour. Park along
Hebert road somewhere between a half mile and a mile east of FM362.
KPC is interested in knowing how many birds approach the roost from the NW
daily and anyone doing this is encouraged to count birds one by one as they
cross Hebert Road and then enter the number into the KPC-Indian Grass Preserve
hotspot on eBird.
There are a limited number of spaces left on two public field trips (nominal
donation of $5 per person) this Wednesday and next Wednesday. There will be an
attempt on these trips to enter closer into where they roost for a great
experience. Tougher to count numbers there, but fun to see and here them.
However it is almost as good any night along Hebert Road.
