On the afternoon of 8-18-2015, in Bastrop State Park on Park Road 1C, I
observed and photographed a juvenile and adult red-headed woodpecker, a
species that is uncommon in Bastrop State Park, according to eBird data. The
species is not as uncommon in Bastrop and Buescher State Parks as it was a
few years ago prior to the huge wildfires of 2011. The vast area of
burned-over pines has provided a good habitat for woodpeckers, including
red-headed woodpeckers. Over the last two years, a small, but observable
population of red-headed woodpeckers has been present in the area adjacent
to Park Road 1C in Bastrop State Park. Following is a Flickr link to
pictures of the juvenile and adult red-headed woodpeckers.
