My quest to document breeding House Finches in the Lower Rio Grande Valley is
off to a good start, as long as I am content with step-by-step process. This
morning I saw at least 2 males and 2 females in or near some Washingtonia
palms. The birds spent some time investigating the spaces at the bases of the
cut palm fronds, possibly looking for nest-sites. Sometimes a female would
disappear for a few moments and then emerge quickly only to fly off. Males
spent some time with females and also sang and preened on nearby phone lines or
trees. I am learning a lot by following Texbirds on this list-serve and
various groups on Facebook, so keep those reports coming. So far still no fully
documented nesting attempt by House Finches in the LRGV, one of their "last
frontiers"!
