Greetings All:
I spent almost ten hours in Hockley County this morning/afterrnoon.
Despite a strong cold front with good winds from the north and widespread
precipitation, migrant songbirds were not 'kicking' it in Hockley County.
Additional bad news: the playa south of Smyer and the Bison Road Playa have
dried down completely - and there was just enough rain to make driving the
dirt road leading to the Smyer Playa a no go.
It was a slow day.
As always, though, there were a few goodies: 2 Scaled Quails at the Smyer
Cemetery, 2 Ring-necked Pheasants in Pep, 2 White-faced Ibises at the West
by 13th Playa in Levelland, 2 American Avocets along Alamo Road, 2 American
Avocets along Bison Road, 1 Baird's Sandpiper along Alamo Road, 2
Franklin's Gulls over Pep, 1 Willow Flycatcher in a woodlot along 597 west
of 1490, 1 Least Flycatcher at a woodlot along 2646 south of 1585, 4 Say's
Phoebes in Pep, 2 Wilson's Warblers in a woodlot along 597 west of 1490, 1
Wilson's Warbler at the Foster x Hawk Playa, 2 Chipping Sparrows at 597 x
1490, 7 Chipping Sparrows in a woodlot along 597 west of 1490, 5 Chipping
Sparrows at woodlot along 2646 south of 1585, 2 Clay-colored Sparrows in a
woodlot along 597 west of 1490, 2 Clay-colored Sparrows at the Ropesville
Cemetery, 1 Brewer's Sparrow in a woodlot along 2646 south of 1585, 1
Lincoln's Sparrow at Levelland City Park, 1 female and 1 male Bronzed
Cowbirds in Pep, and 2 Pine Siskins in Pep.
In Lubbock County I picked up 1 Canada Goose, 2 Gadwalls, 5 Blue-winged
Teals, 2 Cinnamon Teals, 2 Black-necked Stilts, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1
Least Flycatcher, 1 Common Yellowthroat, 1 Wilson's Warbler, 1 male Lazuli
Bunting, 1 female Painted Bunting, and 1 male Bronzed Cowbirds at the Reese
Center Playa as well as a Snowy Egret in the ponds at 19th and Quaker in
Lubbock.
