Greetings All:
I was up and at it very early this morning and had confirmed the
non-availability of my Garza and Yoakum County Breeding Bird Survey Routes
by 6:00 in the ayem - recent rains have made all of the dirt roads I have
to drive to complete any of the five routes I have left to do this year
impassable.

What to do?

Being awake and all I touched base at home to grab a soda or two and headed
on out for a few hours of Hockley County birding.

The sole Lubbock County highlight:1 Black-bellied Whistling Duck flying
over the intersection of 19th Street and Chicago Avenue.  The nearest park
is Higginbotham Park but flooded playas are, this wet early summer, even
closer.

Hockley County highlights included 12 Blue-winged Teals at the Sundown
Water Treatment Ponds (WTP), 2 male Cinnamon Teals at the Sundown WTP, 8
Northern Shovelers at the Sundown WTP, 2 female and 2 male Redheads at the
Sundown WTP, 14 Ruddy Ducks at the Sundown WTP, 2 Scaled Quails near
Sundown, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant near Ropesville. 1 Ring-necked Pheasant
near Sundown, 2 Eared Grebes at the Sundown WTP, 1 Snowy Egret along Alamo
Road, 2 Cattle Egrets along Alamo Road, 4 White-faced Ibises at the Sundown
WTP, 3 Black-necked Stilts south of Smyer, 4 Black-necked Stilts at the
Sundown WTP, 6 American Avocets south of Smyer, 2 male Bronzed Cowbirds at
Levelland City Park, 2 Orchard Orioles along FM 2646, and 2 Lesser
Goldfinches at Sundown City Park.

Not bad for a day in June; generally the SLOWEST month in our region as we
are down to breeding birds at this point.

Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock
