[texbirds] Highlights from the Muleshoe NWR Christmas Bird Count

Greetings All:
The Muleshoe NWR CBC was held on Sunday, 15 December 2013. Ten good folk
didn't have to brave much of anything in the way of weather - it was very
pleasant once the temperatures started climbing and the wind never got to be
much of an annoyance.
Anthony Hewetson covered the portions of the refuge east of Highway 214 and
highlights included 2 Rough-legged Hawks, 1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Common Ravens
(working a dead Mule Deer with 8 Chihuahuan Ravens), 11 McCown's Longspurs, and
3 Rusty Blackbirds. Phillip Kite poached a Merlin that Anthony missed from
Highway 214.
Phillip Kite and Mary Anderson had the northern highlands (not at all like
Scotland, I am afraid) and their highlights were 24 Scaled Quails and 1
Rough-legged Hawk.
Rob Lee, Graham Floyd, Randy Floyd, and Peter Keyel had the Goose Lakes and
draws up to the rim and their highlights were 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 3 Long-eared
Owls, and 1 House Wren.
Manuel De Leon, Susan Bergeson, and Barrett Pierce had the White Lakes and
Headquarters and their highlights included 1 Hermit Thrush, 11 Lapland
Longspurs, 7 McCown's Longspurs, and 1 Green-tailed Towhee. Anthony Hewetson
poached a Golden-crowned Kinglet from the residential area near headquarters.

By the by, the route home kicked out 1 more Rough-legged Hawk west of Bula
(Bailey County) and 4 Snow Geese at Whisperwood Pond (Lubbock County).
