[texbirds] Highlights from the Lubbock County CBC on Saturday

Greetings All:
On Saturday, 20 December 2014, twenty-one birders wandered about the
Lubbock County CBC circle, tallying 127 species (much better than the
record low of 57 species and closing in on the record high of 141 species).

Anthony Hewetson had the northeastern portion of the circle, including the
Lubbock Water Treatment Ponds and Lubbock City Farms.  Highlights for this
area were: 3 Greater White-fronted Geese, 4 Redheads, 2 Greater Scaups, 1
female Common Goldeneye, 1 Eared Grebe, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 1 immature
Golden Eagle, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Wilson's Snipes, 1 Eastern Screech
Owl, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 Merlin, 2 Verdins, 1 Brown Creeper, 1
House Wren, 1 Brown Thrasher, 1 Sage Thrasher, 2 Chestnut-collared
Longspurs, 1 Orange-crowned Warbler, 1 Le Conte's Sparrrow (the
damp/flooded grasslands north of Woods Park), 1 White-throated Sparrow, and
1 Pine Siskin.

Cameron Carver, Craig Carver, and Ryan Shaw covered the V8 Ranch, Buffalo
Springs Lake, Ransom Lake, and some associated farmlands.  Highlights from
their area were: 2 Greater White-fronted Geese, 8 Snow Geese, 1 Ross's
Goose, 4 Wood Ducks, 3 Common Mergansers, 1 Common Loon, 9 Eared Grebes, 1
Osprey, 2 Virginia Rails, 2 Soras, 2 Wilson's Snipes, 1 Merlin, 1 Eastern
Phoebe, 1 Verdin, 1 Brown Creeper, 3 Rock Wrens, 6 Winter Wrens, 2 Carolina
Wrens, 1 Eastern Bluebird, 1 Hermit Thrush, 3 Chestnut-collared Longspurs,
and 10 McCown's Longspurs.

Byron Buckley, Lisa Clark, and Clint Horner covered the southern
farmlands.  Highlights from their area were: 12 Greater White-fronted
Geese, 4 Snow Geese, 1 Osprey, and 1 Cedar Waxwing.

Rob Lee and Manuel De Leon had the northwestern corner of the circle.
Highlights from their area were: 1 Canvasback, 4 Redheads, 1 Rough-legged
Hawk, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Merlin, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 1 Red-breasted
Nuthatch, 1 Rock Wren, and 1 Lesser Goldfinch.

Phillip Kite, Dave Bush, Ellen Hildebrandt, Peter Keyel, and Aaron Kite
covered the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock from Buddy Holly Park downstream to
Loop 289.  Highlights from their area were: 2 Snow Geese, 8 Eared Grebes, 2
Ospreys, 1 Red-shouldered Hawk, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch,
1 Rock Wren, 4 Winter Wrens, 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 28 Cedar Waxwings,
2 Orange-crowned Warblers, and 5 Pine Siskins.

William Wenthe, Colleen Martin, and Gerardo Sandoval had Lubbock
neighborhoods east.  Highlights from their area were: 11 Snow Geese, 3
Ross's Geese, 4 Redheads, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, and 1 Merlin.

Tom Dolan, Toni Dolan, Jan Jannett, and Janice Whittington had Lubbock
neighborhoods west.  Highlights from their area were: 4 Snow Geese, 10 Wood
Ducks, 4 Blue-winged Teals, 41 Canvasbacks, 85 Redheads, 10 Common
Mergansers, 2 Snowy Egrets, and 1 Peregrine Falcon.

Not too shabby at all for a drought-recovery year.
