I spent six hours lightly birding the quadrant of Hockley County yesterday
(31 October 2016).
Highlights were: 2 Blue-winged Teals at Smyer Playa, 4 Redheads south of
Smyer, 2 Lesser Scaups south of Smyer, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant at Smyer
Playa, 1 Eared Grebe south of Smyer, 4 Sandhill Cranes over the Foster x
Hawk Roads Playa, 15 Sandhill Cranes near Opdyke West, 78 Sandhill Cranes
near Ropesville, 16 American Avocets south of Smyer, 14 Long-billed Curlews
at the Smyer Playa, 7 Least Sandpipers at the Smyer Playa, 9 Least
Sandpipers south of Smyer, 1 Spotted Sandpiper south of Smyer, 8 Greater
Yellowlegs along FM 2646, 2 Greater Yellowlegs south of Smyer, 3 Lesser
Yellowlegs south of Smyer, 2 Ring-billed Gulls at the Smyer Playa, 1
Double-crested Cormorant at the Smyer Playa, 1 Great Egret at Brashears
Park in Levelland, 1 Merlin south of Levelland, 1 Prairie Falcon near
Opdyke West, 1 Prairie Falcon south of Smyer, 1 Eastern Phoebe at Levelland
City Park, 1 Bewick's Wren at the Foster x Hawk Roads Playa, 1 Bewick's
Wren at Smyer Playa, 1 male Eastern Bluebird south of Smyer, 2 male
Mountain Bluebirds near Ropesville, 3 American Goldfinches at Levelland
City Park, 4 Orange-crowned Warblers at the Foster x Hawk Roads Playa, 1
Orange-crowned Warbler at Smyer Playa, and 2 Chipping Sparrows along FM
2646.
The best bird of the day - so far as my list was concerned - was the Great
Egret ... as it would have been a horrible miss for the year. I also
managed to get photographs of one of the Prairie Falcons, getting that
species off of my 'seen but not photographed' list for the county this year.
