Greetings All:
On Sunday, I took Martin and Nathan Campbell, on an all-day tour of Crosby
County, with the goal of beating, in a single day, the number of species I
accumulated on my yard list during the entirety of 2016 (89).  We ended up
with 98 species and, had I known we were so close to 100 in a single day, I
might have spent more time in towns where we might have picked up
Great-tailed Grackle (a huge miss) and who knows what else.

A shout out to Nathan Campbell who did a great job - rarely have I met a
ten year old boy with his ability to stay focused on a single task
throughout the day ... and he spotted a lot of the really cool stuff.

Our highlights included: 1 Greater White-fronted Goose at Crosbyton City
Park, 105 Greater White-fronted Geese near Mount Blanco, 85 Snow Geese near
Mount Blanco, 30 Snow Geese at White River Lake, 2 Ross's Geese at White
River Lake, 3 male Common Goldeneyes at White River Lake, 50 Common
Mergansers at White River Lake, 17 Scaled Quails at Canyon Valley, 4 Horned
Grebes at White River Lake, 3 Eared Grebes at White River Lake, 4 Western
Grebes at White River Lake, 1 Clark's Grebe at White River Lake, 1 Greater
Yellowlegs at White River Lake, 2 Bonaparte's Gulls at White River Lake, 1
adult Herring Gull at White River Lake, 1 Great Egret at White River Lake,
1 Red-bellied Woodpecker along Canyon Valley Road, 1 Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker at White River Lake, 2 Common Ravens west of Kalgary, 8 Bushtits
west of White River Lake, 2 Canyon Wrens at Silver Falls Rest Area, 1 Rock
Wren near the intersection of FM 193 and FM 651, 1 Canyon Wren at White
River Lake, 12 Eastern Bluebirds near Kalgary,  9 Mountain Bluebirds at the
Highway 207 crossing of Yellowhouse Canyon, 1 Hermit Thrush at White River
Lake, 2 Pine Siskins at the Highway 207 crossing of  Yellowhouse Canyon. 1
Common Yellowthroat at Silver Falls Rest Area, 1 Le Conte's Sparrow at
White River Lake, and 1 Fox Sparrow at White River Lake.

This was my first visit to the county in 2017 and, therefore, my first
engagement in the epic Crosby County vs. Fayette County game with Rich
Kostecke.  My understanding is that he, somehow, managed to eke out 74
species in his county during the weekend.

Of course, he didn't have a Nathan Campbell with him:)

Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock
