Greetings All:
I ran the Plains 1 Breeding Bird Survey, which runs from a point north of
Plains generally eastward to the Yoakum/Terry County line, then south to a
point southeast of Plains. Due to dune encroachment and lack of
maintenance some of the route has had to be shifted from the road along the
county line (CR 475) one mile west to run, instead, along FM 1780. There
were a few soft spots (from recent rains) and I still had to deal with a
two mile stretch of intermittently deep sand but I got it done. A full
report will follow later but the very few highlights are going out .... now.
From the route (all in Yoakum County): 3 Scaled Quails east of Plains, 2
Scaled Quails southeast of Plains, and 2 Say's Phoebes tending to four
fledglings southeast of Plains.
From Cochran County (on the way home): 12 Scaled Quails south of Whiteface.
From Hockley County (on the way home): 2 Scaled Quails north of Sundown; 4
Black-necked Stilts and 8 American Avocets south of Levelland.
Not much water out that far southwest of Lubbock; not much in the way of
highlights.
Five down ... storms allowing I will get my last BBS of the year run
tomorrow.
