I spent close to six hours in Hockley County on Saturday, focussing on the
few remaining waterbird sites.
Highlights include 19 Blue-winged Teals at the Bison Road Playa, 10
Blue-winged Teals at the Smyer Playa, 19 Blue-wniged Teals south of Smyer,
6 Cinnamon Teals at the Bison Road Playa, 2 Cinnamon Teals at the Smyer
Playa, 2 Scaled Quails along Alamo Road, 7 Black-necked Stilts at the Bison
Road Playa, 2 Black-necked Stilts south of Smyer, 124 American Avocets at
the Bison Road Playa, 27 American Avocets at the Smyer Playa, 2 American
Avocets south of Smyer, 1 Snowy Plover south of Smyer, 1 Greater Yellowlegs
south of Smyer, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs at the Bison Road Playa, 3 Stilt
Sandpipers at the Bison Road Playa, 2 Baird's Sandpipers at the Bison Road
Playa, 2 Baird's Sandpipers at the Smyer Playa, 1 Baird's Sandpiper south
of Smyer, 18 Least Sandpipers at the Bison Road Playa, 21 Least Sandpipers

Cemetery, 1 Chipping Sparrow west of Ropesviille, 1` Clay-colored Sparrow
west of Ropesville, 4 Lark Sparrows along Ellis Road, 1 Lark Sparrow west
of Ropesville, 5 male Yellow-headed Blackbirds at the Smyer Playa, and 1
female and 2 male Yellow-headed Blackbirds south of Smyer.
This data suggests to me that Western Kingbirds were genuinely late to
arrive to the region - my first date for the species at home this year
matched the first date for the species' appearance in Hockley County - the
latest arrival date in well over a decade.
