Greetings All:
With reports of heavy rain in western Hockley County, I talked Drew Harvey
into going for a night drive. We hit Hockley County at about 9:15 PM and
worked the roads, mostly for herptiles, until 1:45 AM.
The only avian highlight was 1 Yellow-crowned Night Heron at the Roundup
Playa.
Herptiles bear mentioning, though. Assuming that our identifications are
all correct (spadefoots are not easy and some stuff was identified by call)
we had many Great Plains Toad, many Texas Toads, possibly a couple of
Woodhouse's Toads (call only), several Green Toads, many Plains Spadefoots,
many New Mexico Spadefoots (also known as Southern Spadefoot or Mexican
Spadefoot), many Couch's Spadefoots, a few Spotted Chorus Frogs (heard
only), a few Great Plains Narrow-mouthed Toads (heard only), several
Checkered Garter Snakes, 1 Gopher Snake, and 1 MILK SNAKE.
This was my first live Milk Snake in Texas and both Drew and I were very
excited!
