I completed the Floydada BBS this morning. This runs eastward from a point
north of Floydada to a point north of Dougherty, drops south a little bit,
and then runs westward back towards Floydada. Dirt roads were sticky,
given the need to pause the survey twice to let rain showers build and
taper off, but I got it done. My poor car will be dropping clods of west
Texas mud for days:)
I had no highlights on the way over.
Highlights from the route (clustered in order encountered) included 2
Gadwalls; 4 Blue-winged Teals, 2 Northern Shovelers, 2 Green-winged Teals,
2 Black-necked, and 4 American Avocets near Rushing Chapel; 1 Ring-necked
Pheasant and 2 Common Yellowthroats at Wind Farm Pond; 2 Common Ravens at
Wind Farm; 4 Blue-winged Teals, 7 Cattle Egrets, 4 White-faced Ibises, 2
Black-necked Stilts, and 2 Say's Phoebes east of Wind Farm; 1 Northern
Pintail, 1 Ring-necked Pheasant, 2 Black-necked Stilts, 2 American Avocets,
and 4 Cave Swallows north of Dougherty; 2 Redheads, 1 Eared Grebe, and 4
Cattle Egrets north-northwest of Dougherty; 2 Blue-winged Teals, 2 Cinnamon
Teals, 6 Cattle Egrets, and 2 American Avocets northwest of Dougherty; 8
Blue-winged Teals west-northwest of Dougherty; 6 Blue-winged Teals, 5
Green-winged Teals, 4 White-faced Ibises, 2 Black-necked Stilts, and 2
Wilson's Phalaropes east of Floydada.
On the way home Floyd County provided a few more treats: 8 Purple Martins
east of Floydada, 1 male Bronzed Cowbird in Floydada, 2 Cattle Egrets, 1
Purple Martin, 2 Verdins, 1 Canyon Wren, and 3 Lesser Goldfinches at the
White River Crossing of Highway 207.
Crosby County did likewise: 2 Yellow-crowned Night Herons on the northern
outskirts of Cone; 2 Blue-winged Teals, 2 Northern Shovelers, 2
Black-necked Stilts, 4 American Avocets in Cone; 2 American Avocets and 4
Purple Martins in Ralls.
Lubbock County yielded but a single highlight: 2 Blue-winged Teals at the
Quaker x 19th Playa.
