I spent the morning counting birds along the Dougherty BBS route, running
from a point just south of Dougherty mostly westward to a point well
southwest of Floydada. A recently closed portion of my route had been
opened though vegetation running down the middle of the road remains in
need of mowing and the debris clotting the one river crossing had been
removed - not a bad traverse.
On the way I had one Crosby County highlights: 1 Common Poorwill near
Silver Falls Rest Area.
The route itself kicked out 4 Blue-winged Teals southeast of Floydada, 2
Green-winged Teals south of Floydada, 2 Redheads south of Floydada, 1
Ring-necked Pheasant just southwest of Dougherty, one Ring-necked Pheasant
southeast of Floydada, 12 Cattle Egrets just southwest of Dougherty, 6
Cattle Egrets a little further west, 2 Cattle Egrets southeast of Floydada,
4 White-faced Ibises southeast of Floydada, 4 White-faced Ibises south of
Floydada, 2 Black-necked Stilts southeast of Floydada, 2 American Avocets
southwest of Dougherty, 2 American Avocets southeast of Floydada, 1 Say's
Phoebe southwest of Floydada, 1 Eastern Kingbird south of Floydada, 1
Bell's Vireo at the CR 121 x White River crossing, 16 Purple Martins
southeast of Floydada, 4 Purple Martins south of Floydada, 1 Cave Swallow
southwest of Dougherty, 1 singing male Common Yellowthroat southeast of
Floydada, 4 male Yellow-headed Blackbirds southeast of Floydada, and 4 male
Bronzed Cowbirds southwest of Floydada.
Hale County highlights on the way home: 2 Blue-winged Teals, 2 Ruddy Ducks,
and 2 American Avocets just north of Abernathy.
Lubbock County highlights on the way home: 2 Blue-winged Teals at the
Quaker x 19th Playa; 1 Great Egret and 2 Snowy Egrets at Maxey Park.
