Greetings All:
I spent 45 minutes at the Bison Road Playa this afternoon, spotting 39
species. Highlights included 18 Blue-winged Teals, 6 Cinnamon Teals, 8
Black-necked Stilts, 132 American Avocets, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 2 Solitary
Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 9 WHIMBRELS, 1 Long-billed Curlew, 1
HUDSONIAN GODWIT (adult female breeding plumage), 4 Stilt Sandpipers
(including one in full breeding plumage), 14 Baird's Sandpipers, 5 Least
Sandpipers, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper, 2 Western Sandpipers, 7 Semipalmated
Sandpipers, 26 Long-billed Dowitchers, and 19 Wilson's Phalaropes.
Conditions were not conducive for good viewing or photography. Steady,
strong winds from the south made using a scope tricky (even with a tripod)
and I had to balance my camera on the rooftop of my car to get any
stability. I did manage, however, to get seven usable shots (out of over
fifty taken) of the Whimbrels and a handful of usable shots (out of close
to two hundred taken) of the Hudsonian Godwit. They are not magazine
worthy (I take that back: they might be fun for a what is this, mystery
bird feature) but they will be filed with my eBird report.
