With the long line of strong storms that swung out over the open ocean late
this morning and into the afternoon we knew it was not good for the birds.
On the approach to the bridge on 124 heading into High Island this afternoon
(4:00) a line of 100+ White Egrets was heading in from the coast.
Eastern Kingbirds were in the grasses, and as I arrived at High Island a
beautiful Indigo Bunting flew across the street.
Birds were still arriving at 7:20 p.m. as we all stood in the middle of 5th
street at the entrance to Boy Scout Woods watching the birds land in the
trees. Blackpoll, Golden-winged, Black-and-white, Chestnut-sided,
Philadelphia Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak....
It must have been a tough ending to the flight across the Gulf as so many
birds were so late in arriving. From the parking lot at Smith Oaks to
walking the back area in Boy Scout Woods you could see birds flying in and
landing all around. Tomorrow morning will have many birds I am thinking and
I have left my car packed to head back early tomorrow.
