TexBirders,
Oops. Sorry, I stated 86 species found on this outing but it was really just 84.

Subject: Harris's Hawks, Barn Owls and Audubon's Orioles on Santa Gertrudis
div. King Ranch, Jan. 19
TexBirders,
On Tuesday, Jan. 19, I once again birded the Santa Gertrudis division of King
Ranch for much of the morning and early afternoon. Overall 86 species were
found but while the Ash-throated Flycatcher was not re-found, other highlights
included Barn Owl (8), Say's Phoebe (3), Sprague's Pipit , Nashville Warbler,
and Audubon's Oriole (2). Also exciting was to watch a couple of Harris's
Hawks attack an American Coot swimming in a small lake. Despite several times
that one of the hawks grabbed it, the coot seemed too heavy for them to drag it
to the shoreline. At one point one of the hawks held the coot under water in a
shallow area in an attempt to apparently drown it. But eventually the hawks
seemed to tire of the activity and the coot ultimately swam off seemingly
unhurt which is hard to believe from the attacks witnessed. The Barn owls
encountered were in a salt cedar grove on the ranch where during the Kingsville
CBC (Jan. 2) we had 11 which I considered pretty amazing.
Good birding,
