Hi Texbirders, I thought I might add that Bill Clark's wonderful article in Birding Magazine several years ago about tail variation in Harlan's Hawks is what paved the way for my growing appreciation of their remarkable diversity. A link to that article is at: <http://www.aba.org/birding/v41n1p30.pdf> Bill also has an updated version of that article and three other articles about Harlan's Hawk morphology, distribution and breeding biology that will help you better understand why Bill and some other raptor biologists believe that Harlan's Hawk deserves full species status. These articles also provide an interesting lesson in ornithological history, showing what can happen when historical mistakes aren't corrected by later researchers. Those articles can be found on the Global Raptor Information Network (GRIN) website at: <http://www.globalraptors.org/grin/ResearcherResults.asp?lresID5> Scroll down and click on one of the PDF links to open the respective article. Very interesting stuff.
