Greetings All:
I spent most of this afternoon exploring the Canyon Lakes of Lubbock. It
was cold, sometimes a bit damp, and there was a light coating of ice on
everything but the roads and the birding was pretty good.
Highlights from Buddy Holly Park: 6 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 White-breasted
Nuthatch, and 1 Orange-crowned Warbler. Ring-necked Ducks would not
usually be a highlight at the Canyon Lakes in November but they have been
very sparse so far this season.
Highlights from MacKenzie Park: 2 Hooded Mergansers and 5 Wilson's Snipes.
Hooded Mergansers are generally not a highlight at the Canyon Lakes in
November but, like Ring-necked Ducks, they have been scarce so far this
season.
Highlights from Lake Six: 8 Ring-necked Ducks, 6 Buffleheads, 18 Hooded
Mergansers, the continuing Red-breasted Merganser, 2 Eared Grebes, 1 Snowy
Egret, 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Winter Wren, 4 Orange-crowned Warblers, and 2
Pine Siskins.
Highlights at the Lubbock Cemetery: 2 Immature Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1
White-breasted Nuthatch, a flock of nine bluebirds which featured at least
4 Eastern Bluebirds and 2 Western Bluebirds, and 4 Orange-crowned Warblers.
Hopefully some of these goodies will hang around for the upcoming CBCs.
