(In case you missed the earlier post, a Great Horned Owl chose a flower pot on a 3rd floor apartment balcony to lay her eggs in. They are now hatched.) My friend Marc is planning to construct a contraption that the owlets will be able to "branch" on when they get older. He is concerned that the balcony railing is too thick and slippery. Your suggestions on what to use would be really appreciated- he was thinking lengths of 1/2 inch dowel rods, or would something else or a different diameter be better? Marc thinks that real branches are too difficult to work with. The goal is for the owlets' feet to be formed correctly. Another concern is that they may fall 3 stories when they are finally out of the nest -do you think putting up screening (not netting) over the deck railing would make any difference? Last, assuming mom will be really aggressive, Marc will have to be quick in doing any work on the balcony - she does leave to go hunting briefly, so he will seize that chance. Any advice that will keep Marc safe? I keep thinking a rehabber might have some good advice, so if you know of one who would be willing to chat with Marc, I will pass that info on. This may seem like too much fretting over four owlets, but the residents at the retirement center are really excited and concerned. Thanks for your help.
