I drove to Port Lavaca Monday morning to check what migrants had come in.
There were 6-8 Short-billed Dowitchers, along with two Whimbrels, feeding near
the boardwalk at the birding center. Residents included 3-4 RoseateÂ
Spoonbills, a half dozen Willets, and a few of the usual herons and egrets.
Clapper Rails were calling. Two Common Loons in breeding plumage were swimming
in Lavaca Bay, on the Point Comfort side of the bridge. I stopped at the
Dacosta turf farm on the way back, and found three Upland Sandpipers and 10-12
American Golden Plovers in the fields. They were visible from the road; per
Brent Ortego's previous post on this subject, birders should not trespass on
the farm property. Bob Becker, Victoria
